Study Hall is Attractive.

1. Carly Stuart is pretty cool. You can't get much cooler than 35 study hall hours in one semester. She will not admit to being a nerd, however. But we know the sexy truth.
2. Julie Arndt is lookin' pretty fly with 24 study hall hours this semester. Mazel tov.

3. The fabulous Luisa Muskus has accumulated 18 hours. Yeah girl, I like your style.
4. Ali Lamb, Neda Taghdiri and Alex Webber have tied for 4th place with 16 total hours this semester.

Donate books, help open a library in Africa

Sarah Pullin, Alie Presnal and Lauren Dupriest are helping Buckner Care Orphan International collect books for the Kariobangi Youth Center in Nairobi, Kenya, which is in the Korgocho Slums.

The girls have been working with middle school students from Carver Academy in Waco who have helped collect the books in the picture. Alie is a TA at Carver Academy and works closely with these students.

Why this is important: The collection of these books will help open a library in the Korgocho Slums.

How YOU can help: Donate any books you have (except textbooks since they are usually pretty heavy to ship). Even ONE BOOK will help. Think about how many books could be collected if everyone donated just one!!

Other ways to help: If you don't have any books, no worries! You can donate money to help ship books to Kenya. (Make checks out to Tallowood Baptist Church)

Proverbs 11:24-25
One man gives freely, yet gains even more. A generous man will prosper; He who refreshes others will himself be refreshed.

For more information, contact any of the girls pictured above.

"Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined."

A lot of you have probably heard that quote by Henry David Thoreau. I even have it painted on the side of a coffee mug.

The meaning doesn't seem too ambiguous, and it probably means something a little different to you than it means to me. I think that's the point of life, really. Life means something different to all of us and what we do is largely up to our own interpretation and choices.

I encourage all of you to strive for the biggest dream you have ever imagined, because I truly believe that our lives can be dramatically changed just by the amount of effort that we put into things, big or small. I sound soap-boxy (is "boxy" even a word?) and I profusely apologize because I'm not generally a soap box.

This is when I change from soap box back to that girl that sends all those study hall emails: This week (and next week and the next week and the one after that) I want all of you to choose a class that you are struggling in - a class that you don't have an A in right now, but you could get an A in if you tried extra hard... You know the one I'm talking about - and put forth a little extra effort in that class. I know we're getting burnt out. But now is the time to distinguish ourselves:

-Get your homework done EARLY

-Go visit with your professor and figure out why your grade isn't what you'd like it to be

-Figure out how to improve said grade

-Start organizing your material for the final exam.
There is no time like the present.

Theta Love

This week is the first "test week" of the semester. And it's not quite over.

Hang in there and study hard and God will take care of the rest! Psalms 46:1

UPDATES: (these are all on the right sidebar)
1. Added study hall times and places for this week. 10 hours total.

2. Added a featured book section. The book is called VANISHING ACTS by Jodi Picoult, author of My Sister's Keeper. Wonderful writer. Very good book.

3. Added a WORD OF THE DAY section. Today's word: LOGORRHEA. It is a noun meaning "excessive talkativeness."

Welcome!

Scholarship and academics is a very important part of who we are as Thetas. Not only are we beautiful, fun, spontaneous, hard-working, loving, and compassionate individuals (the list goes on), we also have pretty good heads on top of these shoulders. We're smart girls.

I kind of jumped onto the blog bandwagon at the beginning of the summer and, as Scholarship Chair, I thought it would be pretty cool to make a blog dedicated to showcasing our smarts. and since tomorrow is the first day of school (cue rolling eyes and gagging noises now)... what better time to start this endeavor.

A few of the things that I would like this wonderful, amazing, better-than-facebook contraption called blogging to accomplish are:

1) a weekly reading list. The Education committee and I will find a "book of the week" and feature it on The Blog every week. A short summary and pictures will follow.

2) featured Thetas who have been caught in the Library or elsewhere on campus studying/tutoring/reading/doing something scholarly.

3) study hall hours. There will be a small section updated each week with the study hall hours for that week. No more forgetting your favorite weekly event!

4) vocabulary word of the week. We are obviously well-read already (hello, we're THETAS) but new words are fun.

5) intriguing tidbits of info that may range from cultural/academic events on campus to healthy snacks to keep you awake while studying. All in the name of scholarship, of course!
